LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Southern Illinois track and field wrapped up a solid weekend at the Kentucky Invitational Saturday, claiming two event titles.
Kyle Landon won Southern's first event of the day in the high jump with a personal-best jump of 2.24m (7'-04.25"). The junior from Chester, Ill. and two-time defending Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) indoor high jump champion is now ranked second nationally.
Senior Josh Freeman picked up his second win in as many meets, as Freeman's fifth heave of 19.67m (64'-06.50") set a new indoor school-record. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native bested his own school record and is now ranked third in the nation.
Fellow senior Bradley Sauer fell just short of an event win on Friday, tallying a runner-up finish in the weight throw. The Murphysboro, Ill. native fouled on three of his first four attempts, but rallied on his sixth and final attempt to record a mark of 21.09m (69'-02.50"). Junior Isaac Ingram finished right behind Sauer in third place with a toss of 19.64m (64'-04.25").
Senior Tyrone Echols' time of 6:87 in the men's 60m race was a new personal-best, and good enough for a fourth place finish in the event, while fellow classmate Kemar Jones took third in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 6.87.
On the women's side, junior Katie Trupp notched a fourth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.91m (12'-10") while junior Chrissa Harris finished 11th in the 400m with a time 57.02.
Freshman Kezia Martin claimed third place in the triple jump with a jump of 11.90m (39'-0.5"). Martin's jump was more than a foot further than her jump of 11.47m (37'-7.75") at the Saluki Fast Start on Dec. 5.
In the women's throwing events, senior Alexus Scott continued her impressive senior campaign with a pair of sixth place finishes in the weight throw and the shot put. Scott, who set personal-bests in both events at the Saluki Fast Start, threw the weight 19.64m (64'-5.25") and followed on Saturday with a 15.83m (51'-11.25") mark in the shot put.
In the relays, the SIU women's 4x400m relay team took fifth, while the Southern men's 4x400m relay team took fourth.
The Salukis return to action Jan. 22, when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in the two-day Gladstein Invitational.
