CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball program hosted its opening game of the Fall World Series on Wednesday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium, with the Maroon team leading 10-7 before the game was postponed due to lightning in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Offense ruled the day, with the teams combining for 25 hits in the seven-inning game. All seven hitters on the Maroon team had either at least one hit or RBI. Will Farmer went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, and Logan Blackfan went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
For the Black team, four players had multi-hit games, led by Ryan Smith's 3-for-3 day. Smith reached in all four plate appearances and drove in a run by taking a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Drew Curtis went 2-for-3 with three of the team's seven RBIs. Newcomers to the team Mitch Fairfield, Jared Kengott and Ranko Stevanovic all had hits, as well.Â
Overall, the Salukis hit .403 on the day, with 14 of 16 batters getting at least one hit. Seven of the 16 hitters had multi-hit days.
The game was postponed with two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. All three games will be seven innings, so the Black Team had the potential tying run at the plate when the game was halted.
