The Southern Illinois men's golf team returns to action this weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU David Toms Intercollegiate, a 12-team event headlined by the No. 4-ranked host Tigers.
The tournament will be played at 7,220-yard, par 72, University Club Golf Course. The Salukis played in the same event last year and finished 13th out of 14 teams.
"The University Club is a great test as it is very demanding from tee to green," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "This course will host an NCAA Regional this spring, so it is good for us to be tested on an NCAA postseason golf course so early in the season. Our program is about teeing it up against great competition and on demanding golf courses and we will accomplish both of those goals this weekend."
In addition to LSU and SIU, the field includes DePaul, Louisiana, Louisana-Monroe, Louisana Tech, McNeese State, Navy, North Texas, Pennsylvania, South Alabama and Western Carolina. Fetcho said his five-man team will consist of Peyton Wilhoit, Carson Seals, Matt Greenfield, Brandon Carlson and Luke Gannon. Wilhoit, Greenfield and Carlson have already won Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors previously this year.
Â
"We have several guys playing well right now, and I think it shows the depth we have by having played two events this season, and we already have three different players that have received Golfer of the Week," Fetcho said. "It will have to be a total team effort this week for us to be successful in such a quality field, but I know we have the fire power to compete at the highest level."
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and finish with 18 on Sunday.
Â
"On this course, you have to be mentally strong and very disciplined with your shots into the green, and I have been pleased with our preparation this week in those areas," Fetcho said. "If we can put our focus on the things we can control this week, then I know we will be successful."
