SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The women's swimming and diving team will be coming home with a fourth place finish at the first ever Missouri State Invitational. Southern Illinois University finished in the top four in 15 of the 16 events.
"The girls really stepped up and raced well today," SIU head coach Rick Walker said. "Only being one month into the season I really like how we swam. I thought we saw the very best from the other schools there, and we handled it well."
The Salukis had six total top three finishes, including a first place finish from Bryn Handley in the 500-yard freestyle. Handley's time of 4:51.52 was a pool record, a record held by none other than Kelsie Walker. Walker would have a top three finish of her own, taking third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.67. Sophomore Emma Brazeau secured a second place finish for the Salukis in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.29, which is .50 seconds faster than the team's top time last year. The story of the day was the performance of newcomer, Samantha Parsons. Parsons had two-second place finishes, the first in the 400-yard IM and the second in the 200-yard breaststroke.
"I really like where we are at right now. I feel like our times are already comparable to last years conference times. We are definitely building up to something special," Walker said.
The women's team will be back in action exactly two weeks from today to take on Illinois and Illinois State in Champaign, Illinois.
