Salukis close out Don DeNoon Invitational with impressive performances

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki track and field teams ended the inaugural Don DeNoon Invitational on a strong note, as both the men's and women's teams took first place in Carbondale. Southern combined to win 14 events, while setting 28 new PR's during the two-day meet.
Cal Urycki earned a hard fought win in the heptathlon, scoring a personal best 4,842 points. Matthew Bigelow finished third with a personal best score of 4,314.
It was a one-two finish for SIU in the men's shot put, as Josh Freeman won the event for the fourth time this season with a top throw of 19.37m (63'-06.75''), more than four meters better than second place. Adam Clay finished behind Freeman, with a throw of 15.09m (49'-06.25'').
Louis Dotson picked up an impressive win in the triple jump, earning the top spot with a jump of 14.48m (47'-06.25").
Kyle Landon earned his third win of the season in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.17m (7'-01.50'').
Southern saw three people set new PRs in the 60 meter dash, as Tyrone Echols ran a personal best time of 6.86 on his way to winning the event. Chad Weaver (7.17) and Dotson (7.18) also set new PRs in the event.
Lucas Horton, Brandon Shemonia, and Josh Maier earned the top-three spots in the one mile run for SIU. Horton earned the win with a time of 4:17.72.
In the 400 meter dash, Warren Hazel gave the Salukis a win in the event with a time of 49.18. He just edged out teammate Nikolai Gall, who finished third.
Kemar Jones just missed out on setting a new personal best time in the 200 meter dash, winning the race with a time of 22.29. Ryan Mayberry did set a new PR in the race, as he turned in a time of 22.76.
Kezia Martin gave the women's team a win in the triple jump with a distance of 12.04m (39'-06.00"). Dahmone Bluford finished seventh, with a personal best jump of 11.43m (37'-06.00").
Mystique Thompson came away with her second win of the season in the 60 meter dash, besting the field with a time of 7.55, which tied her PR.
Southern kept their winning ways going, this time in the 60 meter hurdles. Remy Abrought was rewarded with a win for her strong performance with a time of 8.67. Ashanna Hodge set a new PR in the event with a time of 8.93.
Alexandra Martel ran a tough race in the one mile run, setting a new personal best time of 5:06.44 in her third place finish.
Chrissa Harris added to the Saluki wins, taking first in the 400 meter dash in 57.06. It was the first win of the season for Harris in the event. Chaundia Jones set a new PR with a time of 1:01.38.
The duo of Jones and Jordyn Kincy added to SIU's strong performances, as both runners set new PRs in the 200 meter dash.
In one of the final events of the evening, the women's 4x400 team put on a show, as the team of Alicia Reed, Harris, Hodge, and Thompson won the race with a time of 3:53.75.
With the conclusion of the two-day event, SIU will have a couple of days to prepare for the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., which takes place Feb. 12-13.
