BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Saluki senior Josh Freeman finished seventh in the shot put to earn First-Team All-American honors on the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Birmingham's CrossPlex on Saturday.
Freeman threw 19.38m (63'-7") to claim his third First-Team All-American laurels of his career, and his second-straight indoors. Freeman topped last year's eighth place showing in which the Fox River Grove, Ill, native threw 61'-4". He joins teammate Kyle Landon in becoming the 11th Saluki male to repeat as a First-Team All-American indoors, and the first shot putter to do so since John Marks in 1978 and 1979.
His performance today concludes a successful weekend for the Saluki men, who finished 23rd as a team. It marks the highest finish for the Saluki men at the national meet since the 1992 squad, led by Olympian Darrin Plab, finished in a tie for 19th.
Bradley Sauer and Kyle Landon both tallied fifth-place finishes Friday to earn First-Team All-American distinction of their own, with the three male First-Team All-Americans the most for Southern indoors since 1984.
The Salukis will open outdoor season beginning on March 17 at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
