JONESBORO, Ark. - A pitcher's duel between Southern Illinois and Arkansas State came to an end in the 10th inning, as the Salukis (9-6-1) fell to the Red Wolves (9-7), 1-0, Tuesday night. A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed the winning run to score.
Senior Bryce Sablotny got the start for the Salukis on the mound and was untouchable for most of his time on the hill. Sablotny left the game after five innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts in the no-decision.
"He threw five great innings for us tonight," head coach Ken Henderson said of Sablotny. "He threw the best he has all year, but we had to get him out of there because he is pitching for us again on Sunday."
Southern had a great chance to score the go-ahead run in the 10th inning after loading the bases with only one out. The opportunity was quickly gone, as a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat.
In the bottom half of the 10th, a hit by pitch and a pair of Saluki errors loaded the bases for the Red Wolves. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, a wild pitch by Seth Hackett got just far away enough for the runner on third to score and end the game.
The bullpen for SIU was phenomenal yet again in a tight game. Colten Selvey, Jacob Williams, and Hackett combined to pitch 4.1 innings, allowing no hits, one run with six strikeouts.
"Our bullpen did a fantastic job tonight for us," Henderson said. "Selvey was the best that he has been, Williams was great, and Hackett was solid. The difference tonight was they were able to execute in the extra inning and we could not. We just did not execute on offense."
