ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois sophomore outfielder Jessica Heese was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Heese had nine RBIs in SIU's 3-1 week and earned conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Heese went 7-for-14 in SIU's 3-1 week, slugging .857 and piling up nine RBIs over the four games. Heese was most impressive this weekend at Missouri State, nearly single-handedly giving SIU a series win on the road against the preseason No. 2 team in the league. She hit a grand slam in SIU's 6-3 win and had the go-ahead, 2-RBI double in the seventh inning of SIU's 8-6 win on Sunday. For the weekend, she hit .600 with a 1.100 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. For the week, she had nine RBIs and scored seven runs, herself.
All four games were on the road. SIU topped Murray State 10-5 on Thursday before taking two of three at Missouri State over the weekend. Heese is the third SIU player to earn conference weekly honors this season. Brianna Jones has been named MVC Pitcher of the Week three times and Newcomer of the Week twice more. Shaye Harre was named MVC Player of the Week on March 21.
SIU hosts Murray State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Indiana State to Charlotte West Stadium over the weekend for a three-game series.
