Men's Golf places 14th at Purdue Invitational

The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in 14th place out of 15 teams at the Boilermaker Invitational, dropping one spot during Sunday's final round but finishing ahead of Indiana, after the teams were tied through two rounds.
As a team, SIU shot a 298 in today's round, which was a six-stroke improvement over its second-round 304, but Southern was edged out of 13th place by Wisconsin by two strokes. The Badgers shot a 294 today to finish at 34-over par, compared to 36-over for Southern Illinois. No. 1-ranked Illinois led after every round and cruised to a seven-stroke victory, defeating host Purdue by finishing 17-under par as a team.
"We didn't go there to finish 14th, but if you dig a little deeper there were a lot of positives to take away," said head coach Justin Fetcho. "We played some really good golf at times. We were fortunate to be paired with two Big Ten teams today. The guys embraced that challenge of playing against a bigger name school, and we had one of the better rounds of the day going, we were under par, but didn't play well on our back nine stretch to close it out."
Individually, the Salukis were led by freshman Peyton Wilhoit, who tied for 31st place out of 84 golfers at 5-over par. Wilhoit was among the top performers on Par 3 holes where he averaged an even 3.00 strokes. He was also one of only four golfers to pick up an eagle at the 7,465 yard Kampen Course.
"That was big for Peyton to do that," Fetcho said. "His confidence has been up and down this spring, but he has a couple of quality rounds under his belt heading into our conference championship."
Next up for Southern Illinois is the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Hutchinson, Kan. on April 25-26.
