LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Southern Illinois track and field team had four student-athletes qualify for the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships on day two of the 2016 NCAA West Preliminary, hosted by Kansas University. Seniors Bradley Sauer and DeAnna Price, and juniors Chrissa Harris and Kyle Landon advanced to the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 8 through June 11.
Sauer uncorked a personal-best toss of 213'-05" (65.05m) in the men's hammer to finish sixth. He was one of three from the Missouri Valley Conference to qualify, as Justin Baker of UNI finished fifth and Skylar Arneson of Wichita State took ninth. It marks the third time that Sauer has qualified for a NCAA Championship, and the first time that he has done so outdoors after qualifying for a pair of NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw.
Harris followed Sauer to become SIU's second national qualifier of the day, taking second in her heat with a time of 54.10. It was the 11th-fastest time overall, and will give the Carbondale, Ill. native an opportunity to become SIU's first female to earn All-America status in a track event outdoors since her coach, Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske did so in the 100-meter hurdles in 1989.
Price, the reigning NCAA hammer throw champion, won her signature event Friday with a toss of 235'-1" (71.66m). The Moscow Mills, Mo. native will try to become just the third Saluki to repeat as a national champ in the same event.
Landon became the fourth Saluki to advance with a fourth-place finish with a clearance of 7'-1" (2.16m). The Chester, Ill. product was one of 11 to clear that height and nearly qualified in two events. He set a PR in the men's long jump with a leap of 24'-5.50" (7.45m), but missed out on qualifying for the national meet by two and a quarter inches to place 15th.
The Salukis will conclude the West Regional Sunday with Kemar Jones and Josh Freeman attempting to join their four teammates in Tracktown. Jones will run the 110-meter hurdles at 12 p.m., while Freeman will get the day started at 9:30 a.m. with the discus before throwing the shot at 3 p.m.
