CARBONDALE, Ill. — Fresh off breaking the American Collegiate hammer throw record, Southern Illinois thrower DeAnna Price has been added to The Bowerman Award watch list, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday afternoon. Given to the nation's top track and field athlete by the USTFCCCA, Price is one of 10 women nationwide on the list.
With a NCAA National Championship already to her name, Price continues to rewrite the all-time collegiate hammer throw top-10 list in her final season with the Salukis. She now owns four of the nine farthest throws ever by a collegiate, and has equaled or surpassed 230 feet (70.10m) 15 times this season, four of which came Friday night at SIU-Edwardsville. Her toss of 72.66m ranks as the seventh-best throw in the world this season and surpassed the Olympic 'A' standard by well over a meter.
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation.
Past winners of the Bowerman Award include Olympic gold medalist, four-time World Champion and decathlon world-record holder Ashton Eaton (2010), 10,000-meter Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp (2009), 2011 IAAF World Champion at 1500 meters Jenny Simpson (2009), 2013 100-meter hurdles World Champion Brianna Rollins (2013) as well as 2012 Olympic high jump bronze medalist and 2015 World Champion Derek Drouin (2013).
Price is the second female to represent Southern Illinois on the Bowerman Watch List, and her appearance marks the sixth total watch list appearance for the Salukis.
Southern's next meet is set for Friday and Saturday at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University.
