CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Two current Salukis won medals at the 2016 NACAC U-23 Championships in El Salvador over the weekend.
Competing against other top athletes under 23 years old from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, recent Southern Illinois graduate Josh Freeman earned silver in the men's shot put for Team USA while soon-to-be sophomore Warren Hazel captured bronze in the men's 400-meter dash representing St. Kitts and Nevis.
Freeman, who won gold at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Championships, threw 19.27m (63-02.75) on his second attempt to earn silver in the shot put. He earned first team All-America honors and won his seventh MVC title this year.
Hazel earned bronze in record-setting fashion, shattering the St. Kitts and Nevis 400m record with a lifetime-best time of 45.81. The sophomore sensation broke Melville Rogers' 14-year old national record of 47.24. The time also moves Hazel up to fifth on SIU's all-time list.
The Salukis will send two members of their track & field family to compete in Brazil next month. DeAnna Price and Gwen Berry will don USA uniforms and throw the hammer beginning August 12, with both vying for spots in the final on August 15.
