Doc Knapp Memorial Service of Remembrance set for Monday

A memorial service of remembrance for Dr. Don Knapp will take place at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016, in the Cook Club of SIU Arena on the campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Dr. Knapp, 80, of Benton, Illinois, died Sunday June 12, 2016, at Season Hospice Home in Rochester, Minn.
Don was born December 29, 1935, in Benton, Illinois, to George and Virginia Brown Knapp. He graduated from Benton High School. He attended the University of Illinois — Champaign. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois — Chicago. Initially, Don was in private practice in Robinson, Illinois. He then moved back to Benton, Illinois, and went to work at Southern Illinois University — Carbondale. He became the director of the Student Health Service. During this time he became the team physician for the Southern Illinois University — Carbondale men's basketball team. He enjoyed this for 30 years.
Don married Evelyn Schlichting July 11, 1998, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church at Waltham, Minnesota.
Don is survived by his wife Evelyn, two sons Bill (Robin) and John, both of California, a sister Lynn (Jamie) Shotts of Benton, Illinois, and his nephew and niece Allan (Kelly) and Julie Shotts.
Don loved to play golf and loved working with the basketball team.
