CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced today the program has signed Stetson University transfer Dirk Kuehler, who will be a junior on this year's team with two years of eligibility remaining.
Kuehler played two seasons at Stetson and competed in 22 tournaments, spanning 57 rounds of collegiate golf. The New Smyrna Beach, Fla. native finished second on the team with a 75.08 stroke average in 2015 and tied for 15th place out of 40 competitors at the Atlantic Sun Conference championship. His low tournament score for the season was 2-over par at the Wofford Invitational, where he placed 29th out of 75 golfers and recorded a season-low 69 in the final round.
"We are very excited to add a player with Division I college experience, and Dirk is looking forward to helping our program compete for a National Championship," said Fetcho. "Off the course, Dirk has proven he is an excellent student as he graduated in three years and will be working on his master's degree here at SIU. He will provide valuable leadership skills both on and off the golf course."
Kuehler attended Spruce Creek High School in Fla., where he was an honor roll student and member of the golf and volleyball teams. He led the golf team to three top-five state finishes, including one state title. Individually, he placed third in the state in 2010 and was a two-time Junior Florida Cup selection by the Florida State Golf Association.
The Salukis return six lettermen from last year's team that won the Missouri Valley Conference championship and earned the school's first-ever NCAA Regional bid. Kuehler is part of a four-person recruting class that also includes freshmen Frankie Thomas (St. Louis, Mo.), Sam Meek (Peterborough, Canada) and Carson Seals (Ardmore, Okla.). SIU opens its season on Sept. 12 at the Murray State Invitational.
