CARBONDALE, Ill. — Coming off the program's first-ever NCAA Regional appearance last season, Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced the team's 2016-17 schedule today, calling it "the strongest tournament schedule ever played in Saluki Golf history."
The Salukis play four fall tournaments this year, opening at the Murray State Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and continuing with the Iowa Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), the LSU David Toms Intercollegiate (Oct. 8-9) and the Kennesaw State Pinetree Intercollegiate (Oct. 24-25).
The spring schedule should prove equally challenging with stops at the Arizona Intercollegiate (Jan. 23-24), the Louisiana-Lafayette Classics Invitational (Feb. 27-28), the Florida State Seminole Intercollegiate (Mar. 10-12), the Tennessee Tech Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate (Mar. 19-21), the Gary Koch Invitational (April 10-11) and the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational (April 15-16).
"We are playing strong competition every week on some demanding golf courses," Fetcho said. "We are playing tournaments at two sites (LSU and Purdue) that will host an NCAA Regional this year, so that will be good preparation for us as we want to compete in the NCAA postseason again. We will see several Power Five conference opponents and I am excited to show them what Saluki Golf is all about."
The postseason begins with the MVC Championships (April 24-25) in Lemont, Ill., and SIU hopes to continue on to the NCAA Regionals (May 15-17) and NCAA National Championship (May 26-31).
"Playing tough opponents on demanding golf courses in the regular season will prepare us to be mentally tough when the postseason rolls around," Fetcho said. "This schedule illustrates that we are willing to compete against the best teams and the best players every week."
