Southern Illinois seniors Brandon Carlson and Matt Greenfield were named Missouri Valley Conference co-Golfers of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
Both players tied for third place at the Murray State Invitational and each recorded personal-best scores of 4-under par at the par-71, 6,601-yard Miller Memorial Golf Course. The duo was instrumental in leading a comeback victory for SIU in the final round, in which the team rallied from two strokes down to beat UT Martin by four strokes.
Carlson (68-73-68 = 209) led the field in scoring on par-5 holes with an 8-under mark. He finished the tournament with one eagle and 13 birdies. Greenfield (72-68-69 = 209), who won MVC honors for the second time in his career, had nine birdies in the tournament and was second overall with 41 pars.
The Salukis, who are coming off a season in which they won the school's first-ever conference title, have three more tournaments this fall — at Iowa, at LSU and at Kennesaw State.
"We have a group of guys who believe in themselves and won't be afraid of Power Five conference schools," said head coach Justin Fetcho. "That's why we schedule tough events on demanding golf courses. We're pushing each other to be better and trying to take advantage of the opportunities."
