09/15/2016 | 12:20:00 | Men's Tennis
The Southern Illinois men's tennis team opens tournament play on Friday at the River Forest Collegiate Invitational in River Forest, Ill.
The Salukis will face DePaul, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Saint Louis, Detroit, UIC, and Youngstown State.
"We play NIU every year," said Jonny Rigby, the coach of the tennis team. "That is always a really close match. We beat them 4-3 the last two years. We played DePaul two years ago and we beat them in a close match, so I expect a competitive tournament."
The Dawgs will compete in two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Friday, one round of singles and two rounds of doubles on Saturday. The tournament will conclude on Sunday morning. All matches will begin at 9:00 a.m.
"We've gone through our goals and we are going to treat it like any other match," Rigby said. "Coming off of last year we feel as if we're one of the strongest teams, if not the strongest. I think we have a chance of winning, but it just depends on how well the guys perform over the weekend. We're not going to get any easy matches."
