Men's Golf set to compete in Golfweek Conference Challenge

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men's golf team returns to action Friday through Sunday at the 54-hole Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.Â
Twelve teams from 12 conferences will compete for the title at Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Power Five-conference teams in the field include host Iowa, plus Kansas and No. 27-ranked Texas A&M. The rest of the field features Charleston Southern, Lipscomb, James Madison, McNeese State, Idaho, UMKC, Miami University and San Jose State.
SIU played in the same Golweek Conference Challenge tournament last year and finished 13th out of 15 teams. Much has changed since then, however, as Southern went on to win a Missouri Valley Conference title in the spring of 2016. Three weeks ago, the Salukis opened their fall season with a win at the Murray State Invitational. They are currently rated No. 41 in the nation by Golfstat.
"We have three players that played this golf course last year, so I am looking for those returners to really help with our preparation this week," said head coach Justin Fetcho. "We know that at some point in the tournament we are going to face some adversity, and it is about how we handle any situation that is thrown at us. Â Having players with experience on the golf course will be a big advantage in helping us stay strong throughout the event."
Fetcho will bring a five-man team to Iowa that features veterans Brandon Carlson, Matt Greenfield, Peyton Wilhoit and Luke Gannon, plus freshman Carson Seals. Wilhoit led the team last year with a four-over-par score of 220 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, that included even-par 72s in the first and third rounds.
"This is a great event to showcase what MVC golf is all about and to show the other conferences that our league is really strong," Fetcho said. "With the initial Golfstat ranking having us ranked No. 41 in the country, we are looking to prove that we belong among the great teams in college golf."
