Six Salukis earn top-5 finishes on day one of Vandy Invite

The Southern Illinois track and field teams opened up its two-day weekend of competition in Nashville in outstanding fashion, picking up an event win, two runner-up finishes and three other top-5 finishes.

Kyle Landon was Southern's top performer, as he cleared 7'-3" (2.21m) on his third and final attempt to win the high jump Friday night and post his first win of 2017.

The Chester, Ill. native advanced with a first attempt clearance of 7'-1.75" (2.18m), and was the only jumper of the three remaining to clear 7'-3". Landon moves into a four-way tie with one of the jumpers he bested Friday, Arizona's Justice Summerset, for third in the nation.

Isaac Ingram and Freya Block were the top-collegiate finishers in the men's and women's weight throw, as both took second Friday night.

Ingram set a huge lifetime-best in the weight with a heave of 67'-0" (20.42m). The Harrisburg, Ill. product took second and jumps from eighth to sixth on SIU's all-time top-10. He is also one of just 15 throwers in the nation to throw 67 ft. or better this season, as he's currently ranked 15^th in the nation, and first in the MVC.

Block finished as the runner-up to 2016 Olympian DeAnna Price. Price won the event with a personal-best toss of 75'-10.25" (23.12m). Block, the reigning MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, threw 64'-0.25" (19.51m), and was joined in the top-10 by freshman Alexis Roberson. Roberson set a new personal-best by over two feet to finish sixth.

Warren Hazel tallied his third top-10 school mark in as many meets, running the 200-meter dash in 21.53 to finish fifth. His time is the fourth-fastest time in school history, and the Old Roads, St. Kitts native has either improved upon a top-10 mark or cracked the top-10 in the 60m, 200m and 400m. The sophomore sensation is fresh off of running the seventh-fastest 400m time in the nation at the Illini Classic, where he also recorded the fifth-best 60m time in school history.

In the long jump, Franklin Adams jumped 24'-1" (7.34m) to finish fourth Friday night in a field of 27 jumpers. It's the second time this season, and fifth time in his indoor career, that the West Orange, N.J. product has leaped 24 ft. or further.

Over at the pole vault, Nathan Schuck cleared 16'-0.75" (4.90m) on his second attempt to place fifth. He is one of only three vaulters in the Valley to clear 16 ft. or higher this season.

The Salukis resume competition tomorrow at 10 a.m. with running events, and field events begin at 11 a.m., starting with the women's shot put.
