CARBONDALE, ILL. – The intercollegiate Tennis Association released its Oracle/ITA Division I men's collegiate tennis rankings, Monday. Southern Illinois University senior, Piotr Baranski, is ranked as the No. 84 best player in the country in singles play. His regional ranking (central) cracked the top ten at No. 9. Baranski was not only ranked in singles, but in doubles as well. He and partner, Alex Pozo, were ranked at No. 31 in the nation and No. 2 in the central region. This is the second consecutive season that Pozo has had a regional ranking inside the top-ten.
Baranski is a combined 11-2 this season in singles play. His two losses this season came at the hand of SEC opponent Arkansas and because of injury. Prior to his first loss, Baranski started the season at a perfect 10-0. Some of his key wins have been over power five conference opponents including, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Purdue.
The doubles pair of Baranski and Pozo has proven to be a very tough out for any opponent. Their three wins have been against the University of Minnesota, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Nebraska. The sole loss on their resume this season came against the University of Tulsa. The Saluki duo was able to send it to extras, but fell 9-7.
This is the second consecutive season the men's tennis team has found themselves in the ITA rankings. Last year, SIU had two doubles team ranked inside the top ten in the central region, and the doubles team of Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka were ranked as high as No. 41 in the nation.
"It's another big statement from our program," graduate coach Jonny Rigby said. "Once again this shows that we can compete with some of the biggest universities in the country."
Baranski and Pozo will be back in action on Feb. 17, when SIU takes on Belmont University in Carbondale.
