Softball picked third in preseason conference poll

CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Missouri Valley Conference released the Softball preseason coaches poll, Wednesday. Southern Illinois was picked to finish third, receiving 82 points. Only ten points separate the Salukis and the two teams that grabbed the top two spots. In second place, with 88 points, is last year's MVC champion Wichita State. Selected to win the conference is last year's runner-up, Drake, who finished with 92 points.Â
After the top three spots their is a 14 point gap. Northern Iowa was selected to finish fourth, followed by Illinois State, Evansville, and Missouri State. Rounding out the bottom three are Bradley, Indiana State, and Loyola.Â
The preseason All-Conference team was released as well. Shaye Harre (1B) and Brianna Jones (P) were selected to the 13 player roster. SIU's two selections are tied for the second most of any team in the valley represented on the preseason list. Both, Harre and Jones earned first team All-Conference a season ago.Â
During head coach Kerri Blaylock's tenure at SIU the Softball team has finished each season with a winning record in the MVC. In her 17 seasons Southern has finished inside the top three 13 times.Â
The Salukis start their season in 17 days at the Lion Classic in Hammond, Louisiana. SIU's first game is on the Feb. 10 against the University of Nevada.Â
