Three Salukis won event titles on day two of the Indiana University Relays on Saturday, Jan. 28. Southern concluded the two-day event with four event titles and 14 top-five finishes.
On the track, Warren Hazel continues his sensational sophomore campaign, as he won the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 46.85. His mark is the fourth-best in school history, and gives the Old Roads, St. Kitts native the 10th-best mark in the nation.
Meanwhile, Kyle Landon cleared 7'-1.50" (2.17m) to win his second-straight high jump title. The Chester, Ill. native took three cracks at 7'-3.25" (2.22m), but couldn't quite get over unscathed. His clearance of 7'-3" (2.21m) at the Vanderbilt Invitational remains tied for fourth in the NCAA this season.
Cara Engel set a huge PR to win the pole vault, as she cleared 13'-6.25" (4.12m) on her first attempt at the height. Her clearance is the best in the Missouri Valley Conference this season, and it gives the Grayslake, Ill. native the 13th-best mark in the NCAA to date. The top-16 in each event advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
The Salukis throwers did their part to add to SIU's haul of top-five finishes on day two, as Isaac Ingram set a PR to finish second in the weight throw. Ingram hurled the weight 67'-5.5" (20.56m) on his fifth throw Saturday. It marks the second-straight meet that the Harrisburg, Ill. product has posted a mark of 65' or better. On the women's side, Freya Block added a fourth-place finish with a throw that measured 63'-0" (19.20m).
Shafiqua Maloney made her Saluki debut at the Indiana Relays, taking sixth in the 400-meter dash in a crowded field. She ran 57.27 on Saturday, the second-fastest time in the 400m this season by a Saluki. She later ran the anchor for Southern's 4x400 relay team that etched their collective names in the SIU record book.
The Salukis notched their final top-5 school mark of the day in the women's 4x400 relay. The quartet of Tyra Wooten, Genesis Ewell, Alicia Reed and Maloney crossed the finish line in 3:46.38 to place second. It's the fifth-fastest time in school history, and the fastest time by a Saluki foursome since 2010.
SIU returns to the track on Friday, Feb. 3, when it hosts the two-day Don DeNoon Invitational.
