Peyton Wilhoit cards fifth-best round in school history.
Southern Illinois junior men's golfer Peyton Wilhoit shot a 66 — the fifth-best round in school history — during the first round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Georgia on Monday and leads the 61-man field by three strokes.
On a rain-shortened Day One, Wilhoit (-6) carded a career-best round and leads second-place David Ganz of Gonzaga by three strokes. He birdied four holes, eagled No. 16, and did not record a bogey. Wilhoit's stellar round lifted SIU (-1) into a tie for first place with Western Kentucky (-1). The final round begins on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Wilhoit wasn't the only Saluki to shoot under par today. Teammates Luke Gannon (-2) and Frankie Thomas (-2) are both tied for fourth place on the leaderboard, though Thomas' competed as an individual and not one of Southern's five team members. As a team, SIU combined for 12 birdies and one eagle.
