The Southern Illinois men's golf team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete in LSU's David Toms Intercollegiate.Â
The lineup for Friday-Saturday tournament features Central Arkansas, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Lynn, McNeese St., Navy, New Orleans, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Pennsylvania, Southeastern Louisiana, and Southern Illinois. Nine of the 12 teams are returning from last years' tournament and this marks SIU's third-straight appearance at the David Toms Intercollegiate.Â
"We are excited to get back into competition after having two weeks off," said Saluki head coach Justin Fetcho. "We have been working hard and working on some of the things that have been holding us back in previous tournaments. I have been very pleased with the steps that we have made over the last two weeks and I am looking forward to watching us put it together in a tournament setting."
The University Club was created by PGA Champion, David Toms and LSU Alumni Jim Lipe. The course winds through the wetlands of Louisiana.
"The University Club is a very demanding golf course. The green complexes are very challenging and you have to have ball control and discipline when playing this style of course. This golf course has the potential to beat you up and you just have to stay strong and tough the entire time because it will be challenging for everyone."
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday and Sunday, but the entire schedule was moved up one day due to an impending tropical storm. The Saluki lineup will be Peyton Wilhoit, Luke Gannon, Sam Meek, Hunter York and Dirk Kuehler, with Dean Harpe playing as an individual.
"With the way we have been performing at home in qualifying, we have the ability and the talent to see all six players finish high on the leader board," Fetcho said. "It is up to them to believe in themselves and to focus only on the things they can control and not get frustrated through outside influences."
Live stats will be available via GolfStat. The teams will tee off on Friday at 1 PM for the first round. Rounds two and three will be Saturday with round two starting at 8:30 AM.Â
