Peyton Wilhoit posts career-best fifth-place finish at LSU

The Southern Illinois men's golf team claimed sixth place at LSU's David Toms Intercollegiate, and junior Peyton Wilhoit matched a career-best finish by placing fifth overall. The 13 teams in the field completed only two rounds due to rain associated with Hurricane Nate.

"We came and we put ourselves in a good position and handled the weather and adversity," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "We would've liked to have closed with just a few more shots today, but to come down here and have a quality finish against a good field is something we can take momentum from."

LSU (-11) won the team title by 17 strokes over North Texas (+6). The Salukis (+16) had a total of 25 birdies throughout the tournament. Wilhoit (-2) and Dirk Kuehler (+8) both carded eight birdies. Sophomore Sam Meek (+16) had the only eagle of the day. Hunter York (+6) ended the tournament tied for 22nd.

Wilhoit matched his best tournament finish during his career at SIU, equaling his fifth-place showing at the MVC Tournament in 2016.

"This was by far the best tournament of his Saluki career," Fetcho said. "I'm hoping he uses this as a spring board to finish off the fall strong. He has the ability to go out and win a golf tournament. I think if he keeps knocking on the door, he'll be able to make that happen. I'm very proud of Peyton's effort and what he was able to do today and yesterday."

SIU plays one more fall tournament — the Pinetree Intercollegiate — in Kennesaw, Georgia on October 23-24.
