The Southern Illinois volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the Loyola Ramblers by the set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 Friday night in Chicago, Ill.Â
The Ramblers earned their fourth-straight win over the Salukis to improve to 5-23, and 4-13 in MVC play. Â The loss dashes SIU's conference tournament hopes as Southern falls to 6-22 and 5-12 in the Valley. The Salukis entered the night two-back of the conference tournament and needed to win both of their remaining contests to have a chance to advance.
Abby Barrow was a perfect six-for-six in the opening frame, as her first kill staked SIU to a 6-5 lead in set one. That was the only time Southern led in the opening frame, as Barrow's sixth kill of set one drew SIU to within one, 18-17, but the Ramblers scored seven-straight points to claim the opening set, 25-17.
Loyola thwarted SIU's comeback attempt in set three, as Southern trailed by five early but took an 18-17 lead after Emma Baalman stuffed the Ramblers setter. Loyola reclaimed the lead before SIU went to Estrada for two kills to get to within one, 22-21. An ace by Alayna Martin tied the frame, 23-23, but the Ramblers closed with back-to-back points to seal the win.Â
Three Saluki seniors, Kolby Meeks, Abby Barrow and Andrea Estrada, each finished with eight kills. Fellow senior Ashley Edelen led the defensive efforts with 10 digs.
SIU closes out the 2017 season tomorrow at Valparaiso. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
