Anthony Knighton named a finalist for Jerry Rice Award

(STATS) - Southern Illinois football freshman defensive end Anthony Knighton was named a finalist for the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award, the organization announced Monday. Knighton set SIU freshman records and led all MVFC freshmen in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (11.0) this season.
Knighton, a Fort Pierce, Fla., native, is the first Jerry Rice Award Finalist in Saluki Football history. He ranked third nationally among freshmen in tackles for loss and was fourth in sacks. He led SIU in sacks, tackles for loss, tackle for loss yardage and QB hurries. He had 39 tackes (27 solos) and forced two fumbles while starting all 11 games at defensive end.Â

STATS Release and Complete List of Finalists
The lists of nominees were pared to finalists for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award (FCS defensive player of the year), STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year) and STATS FCS Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year).
All four awards and the STATS FCS Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be celebrated at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation, scheduled for Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the national championship game.
The voting panel consists of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. Voting is based on the regular season.
