Anthony Knighton and Raphael Leonard named to MVFC All-Newcomer Team

ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois football players Anthony Knighton and Raphael Leonard were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer team, the league announced Tuesday.

Anthony Knighton, a redshirt freshman who was named honorable All-MVFC yesterday, was the runner-up for the MVFC Freshman of the Year award and was a Jerry Rice Award finalist. He led all MVFC freshmen in sacks, tackles for loss, and tackle for loss yardage. He set SIU freshmen records in sacks and tackles for loss, and he ranked third nationally among freshmen in tackles for loss (11.0) and was fourth in sacks (6.5). He started all 11 games and led SIU in sacks, tackles for loss and QB hurries, and he was second on the team in forced fumbles.

Raphael Leonard, a transfer from East Mississippi Community College, ranked sixth in the MVFC in touchdown receptions (5). He finished the year with 34 receptions for 530 yards and five touchdowns. He was second on the team in receiving touchdowns and yards per reception. He started seven games for the Salukis and had 104 receiving yards at Indiana State.
