Three Salukis earn MVFC Academic Honors

ST. LOUIS - Three Southern Illinois football players earned academic honors from the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the league announced Wednesday. Jacob Marnin was a second team selection; and Hans Carmien and Jeremy Chinn were named honorable mention selections.

Jacob Marnin, Offensive Line

Jacob Marnin, a sophomore, earned second team honors in his first season eligible for MVFC All-Academic honors. Marnin was a first-team Academic All-District selection this year, as well. He played in 10 games and started nine at guard. SIU led the MVFC and ranked 12th nationally in fewest sacks allowed. As a true freshman, Marnin earned a spot on the MVFC Academic honor roll; and last season, he earned the MVFC Commissioner's Academic Excellence award. He has started 20 of a possible 22 games. Marnin holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in criminology and criminal sciences.

Hans Carmien, Fullback

Hans Carmien finished his Saluki career as a two-time honorable mention All-MVFC honoree. He earned the MVFC President's Council Academic Award in 2016, the highest academic honor given by the MVFC. He played in 10 games this year and started seven. He had four receptions for 31 yard sand a touchdown. He's a two-time recipient of the MVFC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and also earned a spot on the Academic Honor Roll in 2013. Carmien holds a 3.667 GPA in agribusiness economics.

Jeremy Chinn, Defensive Back

Jeremy Chinn, a sophomore, was a second-team All-MVFC honoree this season. He led the MVFC in forced fumbles (40) and was sixth in interceptions (3). He led the MVFC in combined forced fumbles and interceptions (7). He was third on the team with 66 tackles (47 solos) and broke up six passes. He also recovered one fumble. Chinn was a freshman All-American as a true freshman in 2016 and also earned a spot on the 2016 Academic Honor Roll. Chinn holds a 3.559 GPA in exercise science.
