The Saluki men's track and field team was picked to finish first in the annual Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced Thursday.Â
The Saluki men received five first-place votes and 75 total points to finish ahead of Illinois State, who tallied three first place votes and 72 total points. Northern Iowa was third with one first place vote and 67 points while Indiana State (56 points) and Bradley (39 points) rounded out the top-five.
Under the direction of third-year Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske, SIU's men return eight who scored at the indoor conference meet a year ago, including three who took home All-MVC honors.
Warren Hazel returns after a breakout junior campaign that saw the Old Roads, St. Kitts native qualify for both national meets, including a 12th place finish in the indoor 400m. Hazel is joined by fellow NCAA qualifier Jared Kern, who won his first MVC indoor shot put title a year ago after he broke John Smith's 32-year old meet record. Kern went on to earn All-America first team with a fourth place finish at the national meet. Isaac Ingram is also back after he won MVC titles in both the weight throw and the hammer throw last season, becoming just the fifth Saluki male to win both in the same season.
The Saluki women, meanwhile, were picked to finish third in the MVC Preseason Poll. SIU tallied 79 points and garnered one first place vote to finish behind Illinois State (95 points, eight first place votes) and Indiana State (87 points, one first place vote). Northern Iowa (75 points) and Missouri State (64) rounded out the top-five.Â
Southern's women return 10 who scored at the MVC indoor meet a year ago, including three that earned All-MVC laurels. Kezia Martin is back after a junior season in which she won SIU's first indoor triple jump crown in five years. Martin is joined by Mystique Thompson and Tyjuana Eason. Thompson racked up 12 points at last season's conference meet on the strength of a runner-up finish in the 60-meter dash, while Eason is back after a sophomore season in which she broke SIU's indoor 200m record and finished third in the event at the conference meet.
The Salukis open the 2018 track and field season on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they host the Saluki Fast Start. The meet is tentatively scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
