Handley leads team in final day of Saluki Invite

The Saluki swimming and diving team concluded the Saluki Invite today by posting some of the fastest scores of the 2017-18 campaign.

Southern's top performer was senior Bryn Handley. Handley highlighted the meet with a win in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:01.77 to take home Southern's lone victory of the day. She defeated swimmers from Kentucky and Missouri, two nationally ranked programs, to improve upon her MVC-best time in the event. Her time is good for 40th in the NCAA. Handley also recorded a third place finish in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.30.

In the men's 1,000-yard freestyle, senior Michael Wolfe was sixth with a time of 9:31.46. It is currently the fastest SIU time of the season in the event and the third-fastest time in the Mid-American Conference. This is just Wolfe's second meet back in the pool this season after missing the first three while rehabbing an injury.

In the women's 50-yard freestyle, senior Chandler Ott improved upon her best time of the year with a 24.30 for a fifth place finish. On the men's side, sophomore Matt Ciezczak was ninth with a time of 21.55, the best time of the season by any Saluki in the event.

In the women's 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Sam Parsons recorded a fifth place finish with a time of 2:21.60. She was nearly a half-second faster than her previous best time of the season in the event. She currently holds the second-fastest time in the Valley in the 200-yard breaststroke. Parsons also finished ninth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:34.24.

In the women's 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Rita Naude finished in fourth with a time of 57.31 for a new best time in the event for SIU. Her time is currently the third-best in the MVC. On the men's side of the 100-butterfly, senior Joao Facciotti had his best swim of the season with a time of 51.94. It's the fastest time for SIU this season. He finished 10th in the race.

In diving, sophomore Baobao Ji led the way for SIU with a second place result in the women's one-meter dive. Her score of 275.55 was less than 10 points behind the event winner Kendra Kieser from Missouri.

The Salukis are off next week, but are back in action on November 16 when the men's and women's team travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, for the Purdue Invite to face off against teams from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Missouri Valley and the MAC.
