CARBONDALE, Ill. — It has become more common for collegiate golfers to play in tournaments over winter break to keep their skills sharp, and Southern Illinois junior Hunter York is part of that trend, as he will travel to Arizona to compete in the Patriot All-America Invitational, Dec. 26-31.
This Arizona Golf Association, JDM Partners and the Golf Coaches Association of America partner with the Folds of Honor Foundation to host this tournament at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park just outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The field will include 84 PING All-America golfers from all three NCAA Divisions, NAIA and NJCAA rankings as well as from universities outside of the United States. York will join these players to compete on The Wigwam's famed 54-hole Gold Course.
Participants in the invitational play in honor of a fallen or wounded soldier and carry a golf bag with the name and branch of service of a fallen or injured military member. After the tournament, the bags are sold with all proceeds benefiting the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while in active service.
"It's an honor to represent our military by doing what I love," York said. "I'm looking forward to this great experience while playing among some of the nation's finest collegiate golfers."
SIU men's golf alum Matt Greenfield played in the Patriot All-America Invitational in 2015, placing 80th out of 83. York feels that he will be able to match up to the competition. "I feel like if I stick to my game and play to my capabilities then I will be able to compete in one of the last groups on Sunday."
