Final Results and Stats
The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished in a tie for fourth place today at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Salukis, who began the day in sixth, bounced back from a tough close to Monday's opening rounds to climb past McNeese State and Texas – Rio Grande Valley. Southern tied Wyoming, a team ranked 59 spots higher, for fourth. The Salukis also outperformed higher ranked Lamar for the second-straight week. SIU was part of a tight middle part of the leaderboard in which third and eighth place were separated by 10 strokes.
Â
"(We) showed some grit," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We didn't give up and battled out some pars to the very end. There were so many teams tightly bunched that every shot really counted this tournament"
Â
SIU and Wyoming tied with three-round scores of 926. The hosts, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, jumped four spots on the final day to finish in third with a four stroke lead over the two fourth place teams.
Â
Sam Houston State won the tournament by a nine-strokes over second place Dallas Baptist, the top-ranked Division II team.
Â
Southern battled a tough field, course and extreme weather conditions today to climb the leaderboard. The wind blowing in off the Gulf of Mexico created tough situations and inflated the final round scores for almost all of the teams. The Salukis were one of only two teams to have a third round score that was lower than the second round.
Â
"The wind was blowing a solid 25 mph from start to finish," Mihelich said. "It was frustrating to hit fairways and greens but we were able to get up and down a couple more times than the teams that were close to us."
Â
Brooke Cusumano was the best individual player for the Salukis. The senior from St. Louis finished in a tie for seventh with Texas – Rio Grande Valley's Shweta Mansingh, who was the leader after the opening round. Cusumano scored in the 70s in all-three rounds for a total score of 225. She was five strokes behind Sam Houston State's Heather Shake, who was the tournament champion.
Â
Cusumano has finished in the top-10 of seven-straight tournaments dating back to the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational on September 13, 2016.
Â
Junior Alice Ho scrambled to finish inside the top-20 in a tie for 17th with two other players. Ho, who shot an 82 in the second round, shot a 76 in the final round. She had the best final round score for the Salukis. Senior Kristie Yang missed her sixth straight top-20 finish by one stroke. She finished tied for 22nd.
Â
As a team, Southern is on a roll. It has finished in the top-five of seven straight tournaments since the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational in September. It is the team's longest such streak since the 2012-13 season when the Salukis were top-five in eight straight tournaments from September 18, 2012 to March 19, 2013. This streak is tied for the second-longest run of top-five finishes in the Mihelich era.
Â
Southern will look to continue its streak in two weeks when it clashes with several Missouri Valley Conference foes at the Bradley Spring Break Invitational on March 13 and 14th in Dallas.
