SIU's men's tennis team completed a sweep of its spring-break tour by defeating Troy, 4-1 on Tuesday. The Salukis won their fifth-straight match, improved to 12-2 on the season, and avenged a loss to the Trojans last season.
"It was an unbelievable performance and result today," said coach Jonny Rigby. "We lost to this team 4-3 last year, so to get the 4-1 win today was huge."
The Dawgs and the Trojans started off Tuesday's match with doubles. The No. 1 team of Alex Pozo and Piotr Baranski remained undefeated in the spring season by winning their match, 6-1.
In a close set, Wilder Pimentel and Param Pun won their match at No. 3 doubles, 7-6, giving the Salukis the point. Michal Kianicka and Daniel Martinez were defeated at No. 2 doubles.
SIU won the next three points in No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Pimentel, Kianicka and Pun all won their matches, giving Southern the victory.
"Param played like a senior today," Rigby said. "He clinched both the doubles and singles with some clutch points. Overall, I am extremely proud of everyone and we will definitely savor this win."
Coming off the win against Troy, the Salukis look to continue their win-streak when they face the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on March 22 in Carbondale, Ill.
