CEDAR CITY, UTAH - The Southern Illinois University softball program ended its six-game road trip with a 14-2 win over Southern Utah on Tuesday. The Salukis run-ruled the Thunderbirds in five innings.Â
SIU started off the game with a monster first inning. The Salukis plated six runs on five hits, knocking out SUU's starting pitcher after only two outs. Seven players reached base the first time through the lineup, and Susie Baranski and Eyrika Brandenburg had two plate appearances in the inning. Baranski, Shaye Harre, Sydney Jones, Maddy Vermejan, and Savannah Fisher all snagged RBIs.
SUU was able to score one off of Savanna Dover (4-2) in the bottom half of the first, but left three Thunderbird runners on base. Dover kept her composure the next two innings, allowing one run on one hit.
The top of the third was another big offensive inning for the maroon and white, as they scored five more. The inning started with a Jessa Thomas walk, followed by a Fisher bunt and an error, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Brandenburg battled off a 1-2 pitch into left field scoring both Salukis, pushing out SIU's lead to eight. Following Brandenburg's double, SIU got a walk from Harre and two-straight singles by Katelyn Massa and Merri Anne Patterson. The offensive spurt brought in another run, making the game, 10-1. Later in the inning, Vermejan drove in two more, making it 12-1.Â
Fast forward to the top of the fifth, the score is now 13-2, and SIU was in total control of the game. They got one more insurance run off a single from Fisher, giving Dover a 12-run lead for the bottom of the fifth. The Saluki junior silenced SUU at the plate, ending the game. She finished the game with four strikeouts, allowed two earned runs, and gave up just four hits.Â
It was the second-consecutive game the Salukis run-ruled their opponent, and the third time this season. The win pushed SIU's overall record to 12-13, and to 3-3 during their road trip. The team will come home for its first conference series of the season this weekend. SIU will play two Saturday and one on Sunday against the Bradley Braves.Â
