The Saluki women's golf team will host its home tournament, the Saluki Invitational on Sunday at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, Illinois.
This tournament provides a huge opportunity for the Salukis to not only get a win on their home course, but to build some momentum before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, April 16-18.
"This is the last time we will have a chance to put a good round on the card before conference," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "This is the best opportunity for them to have a great tournament."
Of the teams at the event, Southern has the best Golfstat Relative Ranking at No. 166 in the nation. However, last year's tournament champion, IUPUI, will provide solid competition for the Salukis. Several teams including Austin Peay State, Fort Wayne and Lindenwood have golfers from the Carbondale area who will have familiarity with Hickory Ridge.
The Salukis have won the Saluki Invitational eight times since 1995. Mattie Lindner was the last Saluki to win the tournament as an individual in 2015.Â
Southern will have lots of support at the event and the team is looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd.
"This is one of our favorite tournaments of the year," Mihelich said. "The girls will have family and friends here watching. They look forward to this event every year because of the fans and followers of the team. They will play pretty well in front of a live audience."
Hickory Ridge Golf Course is the venue for the event as well as the home course for SIU. The team spends the majority of its time practicing at Hickory Ridge and is very familiar with course layout and how the greens roll.
The tournament starts on Sunday with two rounds at 8:30 a.m. If weather allows, an additional 18 holes will be played on Monday extending the tournament from 36 to 54 holes. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com
There will also be a silent auction going on throughout the event. Items in the auction include two St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs tickets and parking passes for May 13 at Busch Stadium, four tickets to the PGA Tour's BMW Championship in Chicago, multiple golf foursomes to local golf courses including Hickory Ridge and Dalhousie Golf Club. There is also a large amount of Saluki Under Armour apparel up for auction. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Saluki women's golf team.
