The Southern Illinois men's golf team returns to action this weekend at the three-day Mason Rudolph Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt. The tournament will be played at Legends Club in FRanklin, Tennessee, with single rounds Friday through Sunday.
The field includes a pair of teams ranked in the Golfstat top 10 — No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Florida. Also competing in the 14-team tournament are No. 21 Duke, No. 26 Missouri, No. 43 Liberty, No. 49 MTSU, No. 52 Alabama, plus Ball State, Belmont, East Tennessee State, Iowa, Miami (Ohio), SIU and Troy.
"The Legends Club is a great venue and it is always great to play NCAA postseason style golf courses (hosted NCAA Regional last year) during this time of year," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. Â "The field is very strong this year and this event is exactly what we are looking for at this stage of the season. It will provide us with strong competition on a demanding golf course."
Vanderbilt has won the tournament the last two years and four times since its inception in 2001.
Southern's lineup for the event, which starts at 8:30 a.m., is Matt Greenfield, Peyton Wilhoit, Frankie Thomas, Sam Meek and Brandon Carlson.
"If we can build off the momentum from Florida State and continue to manage our emotions, then it will be a great week for us," Fetcho said. "We had several guys step up at our last event and I am hoping that the whole team was able to learn from that experience and become better because of it. We have proven that we have the firepower to go out and shoot some low numbers, now we just have to continue to be able to handle any type of adversity that comes our way. We need to continue to focus on ourselves and only the things we can control and if we accomplish those things, then it will be a successful week."
