The Southern Illinois men's tennis team will play five matches in six days beginning with a home match against Saint Louis on Thursday. The Salukis (7-2) lead the all-time series against the Billikens 21-2.
The team then travels south to play road matches at Austin Peay State (Saturday), Alabama A&M (Sunday), Alabama State (Monday) and Troy (Tuesday). SIU has already beaten APSU, 6-1, on Jan. 15. Southern has never faced Alabama A&M or Alabama State, and the Salukis will look to avenge last season's 4-3 loss to Troy.
"The match versus Troy will be a big one for the guys because they want to get the win over them this time," said SIU coach Jonny Rigby.
Two Salukis are climbing in the ITA national rankings. Piotr Baranski is now ranked No. 88 in singles play. Baranski is also ranked No. 63 with Alex Pozo in doubles.
"Piotr has had an unbelievable season so far," Rigby said. "He still has room for improvement but his ranking is thoroughly deserved. Piotr and Alex have produced some clutch wins for us. The rankings these guys have show that we can compete on a national level."
Tomorrow's match versus the Billikens starts at 2 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
