ST. LOUIS -- Southern Illinois placed two women's basketball players on the 2016-17 All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team and one on the All-Freshman Team, the league announced Wednesday.
Â
Redshirt senior guard Rishonda Napier and junior guard/forward Kylie Giebelhausen were named to the All-MVC First Team, while freshman forward/center Nicole Martin was honored as part of the All-Freshman Team.
Â
For Napier, it marks the third time in her career that she has earned All-MVC First-Team honors, as she joins Nikki Gilmore and Dyana Pierre as the only three-time All-MVC First-Team selections in program history. Giebelhausen, meanwhile, earned the first All-MVC recognition of her career after a breakout junior campaign in which she led the Salukis in scoring and finished the regular season in the top-10 in the Valley in six statistical categories.
Â
Napier finished the regular season second in the MVC in both assists (4.6/game) and three-pointers made (68) while finishing eighth in the league in scoring (13.4/game). The Burbank, Calif., native led the Salukis in scoring nine times this season, and has scored in double-figures 23 times this season. She also led SIU with an average of 1.5 steals per game.
Â
Giebelhausen led the MVC in three-pointers made (77) while ranking seventh in the league in scoring (13.9/game), fifth in blocks (1.0/game), 10th in assists (2.6/game), and second in minutes played (35.0/game). She led the Salukis in scoring 10 times, including six of the last eight games and reached double figures in 23 of SIU's 29 games. Her 77 treys this season are the fourth-most in a single-season in program history.
Â
Martin has appeared in all 29 games this season, including 14 starts. The Jefferson City, Mo. native finished third on the team in rebounds per game (5.2) and was fourth in scoring (6.7 points/game). She's the 10th Saluki to earn inclusion on the All-Freshman Team since 1996-97 and joins Napier and Giebelhausen in doing so.
Â
Missouri Valley Conference specialty awards for Player, Newcomer, Freshman, Defensive Player and Sixth Player of the Year will be announced, in addition to the league's Coach of the Year, at an awards ceremony in between Games 1 and 2 of the MVC Tournament on Thursday, March 9, at iWireless Center in Moline, Ill.
