Softball heads west for Rebel Classic

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Southern Illinois University softball program heads west to play in their fourth road tournament of the season followed by a midweek matchup with Southern Utah. The Salukis are one of five teams competing in the Rebel Classic, hosted by the University of Las Vegas-Nevada (UNLV). SIU will play five games in three days, rest on Monday, then play SU on Tuesday.

RECAP
Southern enters this weekend at 9-10, after going 1-3 at the Coach B Classic. SIU took losses to No. 19 Kentucky, Northern Illinois, and Murray State, all three teams entered the tournament with ten plus wins. In the final game of the Coach B, the Salukis took on the Racers of Murray State. After a huge first inning by MSU, the diamond Dawgs trailed by eight. SIU then took control of the game, shutting out their opponent and scoring seven unanswered runs the rest of the game, bringing some momentum to Nevada.

UNLV – is 13-7 and coming off a 4-0 win over Creighton. The Rebels are winners of four of their last six, and are 7-2 at home this season
New Mexico State – enter the Rebel classic, 4-10. NMSU has yet to win a game at a neutral site and have lost nine straight. Their game against Bradley began the losing streak; they lost to the Braves, 5-3.
Depaul – come to Las Vegas with a 9-6 record overall. The team is currently riding a six game win streak, going undefeated last weekend at the Winthrop Invitational.
Portland State – have won only one game this season (1-14) and that came against Rhode Island on Feb. 26. Some of their notable losses were against Nevada and Murray State.
Southern Utah – going into this weekend the Thunderbirds are 2-11. Their only two wins came against CSU Bakersfield and Binghamton. SU most recently lost to Nevada, 4-3, on March 5.
