Kylie Giebelhausen earned Team MVP honors
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team celebrated the 2016-17 season with its annual end-of-the-year banquet Sunday, April 9. Kylie Giebelhausen took home top honors as she was named the Team's MVP.
Giebelhausen led the Salukis in scoring and finished the season ranked within the top-10 of the Missouri Valley Conference in six statistical categories en route to earning All-MVC First Team honors. The East Peoria, Ill. native took home a total of five awards Sunday, including the Saluki Defensive Award, given to the team's best defender.Â
The Saluki Assist Award went to Rishonda Napier. Napier leaves SIU ranked second all-time in scoring and third all-time in assists, and is one of three Salukis all-time to have been named to the All-MVC First Team three times. She also won the Free Throw Percentage Award Sunday and was honored for having finished her career as Southern's all-time leader in the category with an 84.9% career average.Â
Nicole Martin earned the team's Most Improved Award. Martin finished third on the team in rebounds per game (5.2), which was also the fourth-most by a freshman in the Valley. For her efforts, she earned inclusion on the MVC's All-Freshman Team, becoming just the 10th Saluki all-time to earn a spot on the list. She ended the 2016-17 season on a high note, as she poured in a career-high 19 points at Milwaukee in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
Kim Nebo took home the Saluki Rebounding Award. She finished the season ranked sixth in the conference in rebounds per game (7.3) and leaves Southern ranked 24th all-time in career rebounds with 489. Her nine double-doubles were the second-most in the MVC this season.
Caitlyn Claussen claimed the Saluki Hustle Award. Her energetic play and tenacious defense off the bench was key for the Salukis in a number of games, no more so then in SIU's win over Wichita State on Feb. 12. She entered the game with just over nine minutes to play and helped the Salukis erase a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to earn Southern's first (and last) regular season sweep of the Shockers since the 2007-08 season.Â
The banquet also marked the end of three Saluki careers, seniors Napier, Nebo and Corrigan. A teammate spoke on behalf of each senior, with the seniors each addressing the Saluki faithful on hand one final time.Â
The Salukis finished the season with a 16-15 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. SIU posted a winning record for the third-straight season, the longest such streak for the Salukis in 20 years. Southern also made its second-straight postseason appearance in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), which marked SIU's eighth all-time postseason appearance.Â
