Doyle leads SIU to win over regional rival

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - Nicole Doyle led the Salukis to a 3-1 win over Southeast Missouri State. Doyle pitched six innings, gave up zero earned runs, and struck out seven batters.
The Redhawks were the first to get on the board. In the second inning, SEMO was able to get one runner on with one out. The runner at first then stole second and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter struck out, leaving the Redhawks down to their last chance. SEMO's Ashley Ellis was up next and she put the ball into play on the left side of the field. Savannah Fisher was unable to field it cleanly, allowing Ellis to be safe and a run to score for the Redhawks.Â
Southern trailed SEMO until the fifth inning. The Salukis finally were able to string some hits together and scored two runs and take the lead for the first time. Haley Andrus got the Salukis going with one out by reaching base on an error. Following Andrus was Fisher, who singled through the left side to put runners at second and first with one out. Susie Baranski was up next and picked up her third single of the game to load the bases. Eyrika Brandenburg followed Baranski with a single of her own to tie the game at one all. Shaye Harre then hit a sacrifice fly one batter later, scoring one more Saluki.Â
SIU led the rest of the game. They received one insurance run on a single from Fisher in the top of the sixth, stretching their lead out to two, 3-1. SIU finished the game with ten hits.
Doyle held the Redhawks to only one base runner in the fifth and sixth inning, keeping the momentum on SIU's side. In her six innings, Doyle only allowed two hits.Â
Brianna Jones came in the ninth with one runner on and sent the next three batters down in order to end the game.
The win moved SIU's overall record to 21-18. Southern leaves tomorrow for a series in Chicago against Loyola University. The team will play a double header on Friday and one game on Saturday.Â
