CHICAGO, ILL. - The Southern Illinois softball team (22-19) will have a chance to win its fourth Missouri Valley Conference series tomorrow after splitting with Loyola (19-19) today. SIU defeated LU in game one, 1-0, and then fell in game two, 3-2.
Game one saw great pitching performances from both teams. Brianna Jones (11-9) got the start for Southern and stranded all four players that reached base against her and struck out six. She pitched her third complete-game shutout of the season and is tied with Savanna Dover for the most on the team.
SIU got its lone run in the top of the second inning. Katelyn Massa led off with a single to the right side to get the Dawgs going. Bailee Pulley came in to pinch run for Massa and advanced to second on a bunt by Maddy Vermejan. Sydney Jones drove a single up the middle, scoring Pulley from second and giving SIU a 1-0 lead. That was the only run the Salukis needed.Â
In game two Loyola returned the favor by taking an early lead and never relinquishing it. LU's Shannon McGee led off for the Ramblers with a solo homer to centerfield off of Nicole Doyle (6-7).Â
The score stayed 1-0 until top of the fifth inning when the Salukis scored without getting a hit. The Ramblers committed three errors, and Eyrika Brandenburg eventually came around to score for the Salukis, tying the game at one apiece.Â
In the bottom half of the fifth, Doyle gave up a run before she was relieved by Savanna Dover. A hit led to another run, and at the end of the fifth, the Ramblers led the Salukis, 3-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Salukis tried to rally. Jessa Thomas led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Pulley again came in to pinch run for the Salukis. During Savannah Fisher's at bat, Pulley attempted to steal second base, but was caught between the bases for the first out of the inning. Fisher eventually drew a walk, giving SIU its second base runner of the inning. Baranski moved Fisher over from second to third with a ground ball out. Brandenburg then lined a base hit up the middle for an RBI single, making it a 3-2 game. Harre was retired for the final out of the game.
The loss moved SIU's conference record to 9-5. The teams will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow at 11 a.m.
