CHICAGO, ILL. - Southern Illinois (22-20) committed one error and one mental error in a 2-1 loss to Loyola (20-19) on Saturday. SIU lost two of three to the Ramblers, making it back-to-back series losses for the Salukis.
Game three featured more strong pitching from both teams. Savanna Dover and Brianna Jones combined to give up just three hits. Dover pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in the circle and Jones came in relief and finished out the game.Â
Southern got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth. Eyrika Brandenburg led off with a single to left field on the first pitch. Merri Anne Patterson followed with a base hit to put runners at second and first with nobody out. Loyola's pitchers retired the next two batters before Sydney Jones belted a single up the middle to score the runner from second.Â
The Salukis let a golden opportunity for more runs slip away in the fifth. Savannah Fisher whacked a double to right center, and Susie Baranski followed with a walk, but SIU couldn't push a runner across home plate. The Salukis left six players on base for the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Loyola reached base on an error, followed by two singles to tie the game, 1-1. The Ramblers weren't done, loading the bases on a ball hit up the middle that Fisher knocked down. Because of the speed of the batter, she only had one option and got the force out at second base. The fielder's choice plated the go-ahead run to give the Ramblers a 2-1 lead.
LU (3-12) won its third conference game of the season, while SIU moved to 9-5 in the MVC. The Dawgs will be back in action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Evansville.
