The Southern Illinois men's golf team plays its final regular-season tournament of the season when it competes this weekend at the 14th annual Boilermaker Invitational.
According to the latest Golfweek rankings, there are eight teams among the top 55 in the nation competing at the tournament this year — Kent State (11), UNLV (17), Northwestern (34), Purdue (35), Michigan (49), UCF (53), Michigan State (54) and Ohio State (58). The rest of the field includes Cincinnati (90), Indiana (126), Wisconsin (143), Toledo (164), Southern Illinois (170), Northern Illinois (188) and Miami, OH (186).
"If we stay committed to the process and get back to being a gritty team, then we will see a lot of success this weekend," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "The talent is there for us to do some special things and now it is time for us to just relax and play golf."
Fetcho will use the same five-man lineup this week with Frankie Thomas, Peyton Wilhoit, Brandon Carlson, Matt Greenfield and Sam Meek.
"The five guys traveling this week all have shown the capability to shoot in the 60's at any given course, so I know we have the firepower to compete with anyone," he said.
Â
The 54-hole tournament will be played at Kampen Course, which is par 72 and measures a lengthy 7,465 yards. It is also the site of a 2017 NCAA Regional information
Â
"The Kampen Course is another great, demanding golf course," Fetcho said. "This is a perfect style of course for us to see at this portion of the season. If we can play with patience and discipline, this golf course will set up well for us this week."
This event will be the final tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference championship (April 24-25).Â
"We are looking to end the regular season on a high note and head into the MVC Championship with some positive momentum," Fetcho said. "We have proven at different points throughout the spring that we can compete at a high level, we just haven't been able to put a complete tournament together yet. This week gives us another opportunity to start to put all of the pieces in place."
