The Southern Illinois men's golf team will try to defend its Missouri Valley Conference title on Monday and Tuesday at the league's annual championship event in Lemont, Illinois. In a pre-tournament poll of head coaches, SIU was picked to finish fourth.
1. Wichita State (7) 79
2. Bradley (1) 64
3. Illinois State 62
4. Southern Illinois (1) 61
5. Missouri State 46
6. Drake 34
7. Northern Iowa 27
8. Evansville 21
9. Loyola 11
The tournament is being hosted by Illinois State at the par-72, 7,155-yard Cog Hill Dubsdread Course. The champion will advance to the NCAA Regionals next month.Â
"Cog Hill is going to be a demanding and challenging course as it has hosted PGA Tour events in the past," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "It will be up to us to be able to learn to adjust and adapt as quick as we can to the environment and the conditions. We have done a great job the last several days trying to prepare ourselves for any type of adversity that comes our way. Â We need to just relax and play the game and not get caught up in any of the outside influences that want to creep into our minds."
The Salukis are coming off a strong, ninth-place showing at the prestigious Boilermaker Invitational, where they closed the tournament with the second-best team score.
"We have some guys playing well right now, which is definitely what you want at this point in the season," Fetcho said. Â "We have the talent to be a special team, we just have to be gritty and mentally strong for 54 holes."
SIU's five-man team consists of Sam Meek, Peyton Wilhoit, Brandon Carlson, Matt Greenfield and Frankie Thomas. Meek shot a career-low 67 at Purdue, while Wilhoit (74.0) and Carlson (75.0) have been the team leaders in stroke average this season.
"Of the five guys traveling this week, we have four-different players that have won the MVC Player of the Week and another that set the school record by shooting 64 earlier in the year, so the firepower is there for us to compete with anyone in the field," Fetcho said. "The MVC Championship is a big deal to our program and our players take a lot of pride in this tournament."Â
Southern Illinois won the MVC title last year for the first time in school history.
