The Southern Illinois men's golf team is tied for seventh place after Day One of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Monday in Lemont, Illinois.
The nine teams in the field completed two rounds today at the 7,155-yard Cog Hill Dubsdread Course. The champion will advance to the NCAA Regionals next month.
With 18 holes left to play on Tuesday, Wichita State (+12) is clinging to a one-stroke lead over Illinois State (+13). The Salukis (+43) are 31 strokes off the pace in their quest to win back-to-back league titles.
Southern's top two scorers so far are freshmen Sam Meek (+10) and Frankie Thomas (+12). They are tied for 21st and 29th place, respectively, out of 45 competitors. Meek had six birdies on the day — the sixth most in the field — and had a solid second round going until he triple-bogeyed No. 18.Â
Par 5 holes were SIU's undoing in the first two rounds, as the team ranked last at +17. The Salukis fared much better on Par 3 holes, where they were +13 and just four strokes off the pace set by Illinois State.
