Massa hits walk off in 10 inning game against Evansville
CARBONDALE, ILL. - Saluki freshman Katelyn Massa hit a double off the wall in left center field to score the game-winning run in the 10th inning in a 1-0 walk-off win over Evansville on Tuesday. It was the second walk-off hit of the season for Massa and fourth-straight win for Southern Illinois.
Brianna Jones got the start for SIU and was dominant. The Saluki sophomore held the Purple Aces to just one base runner in the first three innings of the game with four strikeouts. Jones was lights out, especially in the several instances when Evansville was able to get runners in scoring position. Each time there was a Purple Ace at second or third, Jones removed the threat.Â
"This is one of the best games Brianna has thrown all year, " head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "She pitched an amazing game and had great command of all of her pitches from start to finish."
At the plate the Salukis tried to get runners on any way they could against Evansville's Morgan Florey. The last time they faced Florey, she struck out 12 in seven innings. In today's game, Florey scattered six hits, including two by Haley Andrus.
In extra innings, Jones set Evansville down in order in the eighth, and struck out two of three in the ninth. She finished the game with 11 strikeouts and allowed seven hits in the 10-inning shut out win. She threw more than 150 pitches for her fourth shutout win of the season.
The Salukis were finally able to break through for a run in the bottom of the 10th. With one out, Sydney Jones ripped a two-strike single through the left side of the infield. Massa was up next and shot a 2-2 pitch off the wall in the left center gap. Jones was off and running as soon as the ball was hit, racing around around three bags to score the game-winning run. The game winning double was Massa's second walk off hit of the season.Â
" Massa came up with so many big hits when we were recruiting her," Blaylock said. "She does a great job making in game adjustments and I'm incredibly proud of how her."
SIU moved to 13-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference and 26-21 overall. The win over UE was the fifth series win in conference play, topping last year's mark of four. The Dawgs head to Indiana State this weekend for their final road series of the season before returning home the following weekend to face Missouri State for their final games of the regular season.
