CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Salukis season is winding down and will play their final midweek games of their schedule this week. First, the team will wrap up their series with the University of Evansville at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m., followed by a road game on Wednesday at Murray State at 4 p.m.Â
QUICK RECAP
Southern is currently on a three game winning streak, winning a game in Evansville last Wednesday and sweeping Wichita State at home on Sunday. The three wins moved SIU's conference record to 12-7, which puts them in a tie for third place in the Missouri Valley, with seven conference games remaining. SIU has won four series so far in MVC play with a chance to win their fifth when the Purple Aces come to town. The team has yet to be swept by anyone in the conference, winning at least one game against every opponent thus far.Â
Head coach Kerri Blaylock has had double digit wins in MVC every year at SIU, but one. The team added another year (17 consecutive) of having at least 12 wins in the conference season this past week. The past three seasons the team has ended conference play with 15 wins.Â
LONG BALL
During the last four game stretch the Salukis have hit five home runs. All five we hit at pivotal point in the game to extend their lead or break a tie. Merri Anne Patterson is responsible for three of the five, hitting one in the doubleheader against Evansville and two against Wichita State on Sunday. Joining the home run party was fellow senior, Shaye Harre, and junior Sydney Jones. Both ladies had one bomb in game two yesterday that went off the scoreboard at Charlotte West Stadium. SIU drove 33% of their runs in by the long ball, accounting for six of the team's 18 runs in the four game span. This season SIU has five players with at least three home runs.
SALUKIS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
After SIU's 3-1 stint this past week, the team has jumped up to No. 16 in the nation for fielding percentage. Southern currently sports a team fielding percentage of .975, only committing 32 errors in 46 games.
Shaye Harre remains in the rankings in multiple categories. Harre has climbed up all the way No. 3 in walks, having 47 on the year, which is also the new single season record in SIU history. The Saluki senior has also cracked the top 25 in on base percentage and doubles. Harre currently has an OBP of .525, putting her at No. 25 in the country. Her 15 doubles bumped her up to No. 14 in the NCAA, and only two away from tying SIU's single season record.
Joining Harre in the rankings is pitcher, Brianna Jones. Jones ranks in the top 30 in two categories, walks per seven innings and saves. This past week Jones only walked two batters in 17 innings of work, which pushed her up to No. 27 in the country. In saves she is No. 8 the nation after picking up save No. 4 this past weekend.Â
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The Salukis have already played both of their opponents this week once this season. SIU went 1-1 against the Purple Aces last Wednesday in Evansville and the 0-1 against Murray State during the Coach B Classic back in early March. In the doubleheader against UE the Salukis lost game one on a walk off in the seventh inning and then turned around to win game two 10-7. The 7-8 loss over two months ago to Murray State featured a lot of runs from both teams and SIU coming up just short in a comeback.Â
