Kern named MVC Field Athlete of the Week

Kern earns his fifth MVC Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season.
ST. LOUIS — For the third time in four weeks, Saluki thrower Jared Kern has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Kern was the top-collegiate finisher in the shot put at the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational after he broke a three-year old meet record with a heave of 63'-2.25" (19.26m). Kern's best mark came on his third throw, and he now has thrown 63' or further four times this outdoor season. The 2017 NCAA Indoor All-American is ranked third in the NCAA West Region, and eighth in the NCAA in the shot put.
It marks the fifth time that Kern has been named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week this season and SIU has now won all six MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors since opening the 2017 outdoor season on March 25.
With the weather forecast calling for more rain (and wind) across much of the midwest, the Salukis will head south to the Ole Miss Classic. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 6.
